They listened to the preacher's words,
But did not say amen;
They went their way to multiply,
Their many, many sins.
The preacher is a watchman, for,
The True and Living God;
When souls take warning as they should,
God comforts with His rod.
Some preachers seem to be afraid,
To warn against all sin;
And so they compromise God's truth,
The blood is on them then.
The preacher must, if he would save,
His own immortal soul;
Warn Christians not to sin at all,
But play a noble role.
And furthermore, the sinner must,
Be warned against all sin;
He must repent and trust in God,
If he would heaven win.
O, watchman, great is thy reward,
If faithfulness you show;
In preaching God's eternal Word,
And love on all bestow.
